November 2001 Roundtable

***********************************************************************************

TRAINING

Most of our training is finished for the year 2001. The Tiger Den Leader Orientation was well attended, Cub Scout Basic Leader Training had an excellent turnout. Webelos Leader Overnight was successful. Now all the units are well acquainted with how their unit operates. There is only one more opportunity for training for this year (2001). Pow Wow and Den Chief Conference are also considered a training opportunity. This will happen Saturday, November 3, 2001. This is the ultimate in our yearly training schedule.

POW WOW

There is still time to sign up for the Pow Wow experience. "Walk-ins" will be accepted on the day of the Pow Wow. For those who haven’t heard of Pow Wow, there will be many subjects offered that will help answer questions and give you ideas for a more exciting program for your Den and unit.

Don’t worry about being alone at this event. There will be lots of people from River Trails both in attendance and on staff to help make you feel welcome.

"Walk-in" cost is $13.00 at the door and doesn’t include lunch. It’ll be a good idea to make other arrangements for food. Drinks will be available.

The event will be held at Hazelwood West High School; registration is from 7:30am to 8:15am. Opening ceremony starts at 8:45am with closing at 4:00pm.

Talk to Melanie Pippin (636) 337-0196, for more details. She’ll have registration forms to look over so you will have an idea of the programs offered.

DEN CHIEF CONFERENCE

Den Chiefs are older Boy Scouts who help den leaders. This is an opportunity for you to attend a training session for both you and your Den Chief.

The conference will be held at Pow Wow, registration will begin at 7:30am and the program will end at about 4:00pm. Remember that at least one member of your unit must attend with your youth participant.

The cost at the door $9.00 (for both youth and adult) and includes lunch. See someone on Roundtable staff for more information about how a Den Chief can help you.

INFORMATION PLEASE

It has been brought to our attention that many Unit leaders don’t have any idea who to contact with questions. Below is a short list of the District Leaders and their position.

(Voice Mail: 314-361-7787, ext. 325)

If you can’t find the information you need on the website, call one of the chairman and they’ll help you. In the back of the "Cub Scout Leader Book", you’ll find a glossary of Scouting Terms.

SCOUTING FOR FOOD

November is the month for collecting and distributing food collection bags. Bags will be handed out at this roundtable. The date for the bags to be put on residents’ doors is Nov. 10, with bag pickup on Nov. 17.

There are a few safety items for Cub Scouts to be aware of. Never let a Cub Scout team out of your sight. Don’t put bags in mail-boxes. Never let the Cub Scouts walk along a road that doesn’t have a sidewalk. Boys never go into a house unless a leader is with them.

Be sure the boys are in full uniform and travel in pairs. If there is no bag on the porch or doorstep, have the boys to knock on the door to see if there is a donation. Call Gary Hartmann at (636) 937-0155 or Jeff Doty at (314) 361-0600.

POPCORN

Popcorn sales will start tonight! Do you have all the materials you need? If not, call Jane Steffens at 636-677-1280. Sales end on November 28, with pickup December 8. Pickup will be at Herrels warehouse in Imperial.

CUB SCOUT CAMPING

If you want to utilize the facilities at Camp Grizzly, Beaumont Reservation, now is the time to get your name on the list. Council Camping Service is taking reservations for Camp Grizzly 2002 family camp now!

When Camp Grizzly opens, both Unit or Den or Family camping is available. Facilities include the program area, shower house (with sometimes hot and cold showers), indoor toilet, and hiking trails. The program area includes the pirate ship, miners area, Fort Hussman, the maze, and the castle. If you feel like really hiking, the lookout tower is at the top of the mountain.

All areas in Camp Grizzly are available for both camping and picnicking, but reservations must be made. Any visits to a Council facility must have reservations made. Plan your date now.

ST LOUIS SIENCE CENTER

Check with the reservations department of the Center for information and reservations for the "Camp-ins" at the center. They offer hands-on activities for youth grades 3 – 6 with overnight "Camp-ins". The number to contact is (314) 289-4424 or 1-800-456-4424. There will be patches, OMNIMAX Theater, snacks, etc.

PLANNING

Time is slowly slipping away for us. Have you planned for Scout Week? It will be February 3 thru 9, 2002!! This is the week to plan for a display for your school, sponsoring organization, or in a store window. It is important for a Unit to show some of the projects they have done during the year.

A group of Webelos, with leadership, might do a flag ceremony at school; (with pictures) and send the pictures to one of the local newspapers. This is one of many ideas you might think of for Scout Week.

Be sure to promote Scout Sunday with the church of their choice. Contact the Pastor of a church and try to promote a program where the boys would be a part of the service. A flag ceremony would be good.

Just be sure anything you do will be well planned. This puts your Scouts on display. A result might be recruiting of a few new boys. If other boys feel your unit is active and having fun, it’s easier to recruit new boys.
